Welcome to the Wakefield Community Fridge

The Wakefield Community Fridge is a local initiative designed to support residents during tough times by providing free, surplus food to anyone who needs it.

Stocked with donations from supermarkets, local businesses, and individuals, the fridge helps ease the pressure on those struggling with the rising cost of living while also reducing the amount of perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste.

It’s a welcoming, stigma-free space where the community comes together to share resources, care for one another, and promote sustainability.

OUR MISSION

At the Wakefield Community Fridge, our mission is simple: to support people who are struggling by ensuring no one goes without food, while also reducing unnecessary waste.

Every day, tonnes of perfectly edible food is thrown away, even as individuals and families in our community face food insecurity and difficult choices. This often happens because of overstocking, cosmetic imperfections, or short best-before dates. We believe this food should be used to help people who need it most, not end up in bins. That’s why we work closely with local supermarkets, independent shops, and residents to rescue surplus food and make it freely available to those who may be facing hardship, offering dignity, support, and a sense of community.

What We’re Doing

Supporting people through surplus food
We collect high-quality surplus produce and packaged goods so they can be used to support individuals and families who may be struggling to afford enough food. This food is shared through our Community Fridge, helping people meet everyday needs with dignity.

Helping households through difficult times
Many people in our community face rising costs and financial pressure. By redistributing surplus food, we help ease that burden and ensure that good food reaches those who need extra support right now.

Making food accessible and stigma-free
Our Community Fridge is open to anyone who needs it — no vouchers, no referrals, and no judgement. Whether you’re a family trying to make ends meet, someone facing a short-term crisis, or simply needing a bit of help, you are welcome.

Strengthening community support
Food brings people together. Through volunteering, donations, and shared care, we create a supportive space where people look out for one another and no one feels alone in times of need.

Raising awareness and understanding
We help shine a light on food insecurity and the challenges many people face behind closed doors. By encouraging compassion, understanding, and shared responsibility, we aim to build a kinder, more supportive community.
